OPEC launches its first Annual Report on Environment, Climate and Sustainable Development

The Annual Report on Environment, Climate and Sustainable Development 2026 was launched today at the OPEC Secretariat in Vienna, Austria.

The inaugural edition of the report provides an overview of the prevailing perspectives on environmental and sustainable development issues that have taken centre stage in various multilateral fora over the past year. The report intends to create awareness, facilitate understanding on various prevailing views, and encourage convergence towards pragmatic, effective, inclusive and fair solutions.

The report underlines the fact that climate change and other environmental issues are impacted by activities that are essential to supporting human life and societal progress, and sustainability requires that environmental protection and human development are pursued in a mutually supportive manner. In line with OPEC’s forecast that global population is set to expand by about 1.4 billion people to 9.7 billion by 2050, with their activities likely resulting in a doubling in size of the global economy, the environmental impact of human activities is likely to increase.

The publication notes that recent assessments indicate that meaningful progress has been made towards reducing global emissions and advancing the global sustainable development agenda. It emphasizes that the global nature of the challenges associated with environmental protection and sustainable development underpin the need to tackle them through international cooperation, and with this to be grounded in energy realities. The report also highlights the engagement of OPEC and its Member Countries in this regard, predating the establishment of multilateral entities dedicated to these matters.

In his foreword, the OPEC Secretary General, HE Haitham Al Ghais, said: “…the unique circumstances of each country should determine its sustainable future energy pathway. Each country’s approach therefore needs to be understood, respected and supported, provided it contributes its fair share to addressing the respective global challenges.”

The publication will soon be available for download on the OPEC website.
