Stretching from Turkey and Iraq to Turkmenistan and Pakistan, the Islamic Republic of Iran is the world’s 17th largest country in terms of territory, comprising around 1,648 thousand square kilometres. It is one of the world’s oldest continuous major civilizations.
It has a population of around 85.69 million. The capital, Tehran, is located at the foot of the Alborz Mountains, and is home to around seven million people. Most Iranians speak Farsi, while other languages include Azeri, Kurdish and Luri.
Apart from petroleum, the country’s other natural resources include natural gas, coal, chromium, copper, iron ore, lead, manganese, zinc and sulphur. The national currency is the rial.
The Islamic Republic of Iran’s President is HE Masoud Pezeshkian. The country is a Founder Member of OPEC.
