Joint IEA-IEF-OPEC Reports

The IEA, IEF and OPEC jointly held their second symposium on Gas and Coal Market Outlooks in Paris on 30 October 2014.

Held under the Chatham House Rule, the Symposium gathered more than 100 experts with a diverse range of backgrounds: the energy industry, business, government and academia. With the main focus on the interactions and new dynamics between gas and coal, the participants’ different backgrounds and market perspectives contributed to the active discussions and exchange of views on the topics presented.

The IEA, IEF and OPEC jointly hosted their fourth high-level technical workshop in Vienna on 31 March 2014.

Entitled “Interactions between Physical and Financial Energy Markets”, the workshop brought together a broad range of experts from industry, government and the financial and regulatory sectors of the developed and emerging economies to discuss interactions between the physical and financial energy markets.

Held under the Chatham House rule to enable frank discussion, the event built on insights gained from the three previous workshops held in the series, convened in London in 2010 and in the Austrian capital in 2011 and 2013.

The workshops form part of a wider joint programme of work agreed by the three organizations under the Cancun Declaration, which was endorsed by energy ministers at the 12th IEF Ministerial Meeting, held in Cancun, Mexico, in March 2010.

Market dynamics at play in the petrochemical sector were also addressed, in the context of shifting investment and trade patterns.

This symposium is one of the specific areas of cooperation listed in the IEA-IEF-OPEC initiative endorsed by Energy Ministers at the 12th International Energy Forum (Cancún, March 2010) and contained in the Cancun Declaration.

In November 2011, members of the G-20, at their meeting in Cannes, requested that OPEC, IEA and IEF hold an annual joint symposium to discuss and compare the outlooks for gas and coal markets, and to examine the regulation of such markets.

Following this call, the three organizations convened the first joint symposium in Paris on 4 October 2012. More than 90 speakers, participants and national representatives representing the energy industry, governments and the academic world were in attendance.

After detailed and in-depth discussions, the three sponsoring organizations prepared a Joint Report summarizing the symposium's proceedings. This is available here.

The IEA, IEF, and OPEC jointly hosted their second high-level technical workshop in Vienna on 29 November 2011. The event brought together experts from industry, academia, governments, price reporting agencies, and the financial and regulatory sectors to discuss the interactions between the physical and financial energy markets. The Workshop was held under the Chatham House Rule.

The workshop built on the insights already gained on these issues in previous events, namely the first Joint IEA-IEF-OPEC Workshop on "Understanding the New Dynamic: How do the Physical and Financial Markets for Energy Interact" and the first Forum on "Energy Market Regulation: Clarity and Coordination", which were held on 22-23 November 2010 in London.
