OPEC Secretary General receives Libyan Ambassador

Vienna, Austria, 25 August 2016--OPEC Secretary General, HE Mohammad Sanusi Barkindo, received HE Dr. Ibrahim Al-Besbas, Libya’s Ambassador to Austria and Permanent Representative to the International Organizations, on 23 August 2016 at the OPEC Secretariat in Vienna, Austria.

Mr. Al-Besbas congratulated Mr. Barkindo for his new position as OPEC Secretary General and conveyed Libya’s support for his new role. He noted that Mr. Barkindo assumes his new role during challenging times for the oil and gas industry. The support of Libya, said the Secretary General, and the collective efforts and cooperation of OPEC’s other Member Countries, could help overcome such challenges.

Mr. Barkindo told the Ambassador that he was grateful for a long, 30-year friendship with OPEC’s previous Secretary General, Abdalla Salem El-Badri, also from Libya, and noted that they are still in regular contact. He also expressed gratitude for Mr. El-Badri’s valuable help in ensuring a smooth transition.

Mr. Al-Besbas spoke to the Secretary General about the current situation in Libya, which continues to face challenges on various fronts, including oil production. The Secretary General expressed his desire to see all OPEC Member Countries take steps to ensure steady production in the future. He added that production from countries such as Libya, as well as others like Nigeria, continue to be important for global supply.

Both officials also spoke about other matters facing the industry, including the challenge of stability in many oil producing countries.

Although the Secretary General said this is a big issue in the world today, he said the future looked bright and promising – for the Organization, its Member Countries, and other producing countries around the world.
