OPEC to hold the second OPEC-ECS-OPEC Fund Annual Legal Workshop on the Law of the Energy Transition

The OPEC Secretariat will host the Second OPEC-ECS-OPEC Fund Annual Legal Workshop on the Law of the Energy Transition, on Tuesday 13 October 2020, via videoconference

The topic of the 2nd Annual Legal Workshop is the Law of the Energy Transition, a phenomenon seriously impacting the extractive industry but also providing opportunities for the future. The energy transition is characterized by uncertainty, but clear regulatory frameworks and ambitious efforts from all actors and stakeholders in the energy sector are necessary for success, with the oil industry playing a key role.

OPEC Secretary General, HE Mohammad Sanusi Barkindo, has affirmed that “all energy sources will be needed in the years ahead to meet rising demand, and each source has an important role to play in the overall energy mix”. HE Barkindo added that “going forward, we will need the participation of all industry stakeholders — producers, consumers, academia and civil society — to achieve a sustainable stability for our industry”.

The goal of the Workshop is to provide an overview of the challenges and opportunities for the extractive business in the energy transition, to forecast the relevant future regulatory complexities, and to discuss the potential role of International Organizations in supporting a successful energy transition from the perspective of resource rich countries, all from the legal and regulatory perspective.

Representatives of National and International Oil Companies, international law firms, International Organizations, government officers and other world-class speakers will share their experiences and views during the panels. Delegations of lawyers and officers from OPEC Member Countries, participating countries of the Declaration of Cooperation and other oil producing countries will participate in the Workshop.

The Workshop, this year on its second instalment, is the result of the productive collaboration of OPEC, the Energy Charter Secretariat and the OPEC Fund, and provides a forum for information and experience sharing and discussion on crucial and timely topics, which aims to continue in the coming years

The Legal Office of OPEC is working, under the guidance of HE the Secretary General, in providing knowledge and capacity building opportunities to Member Countries and the international community, in the law and regulation relevant to ensure a just energy and economic transition.
