OPEC Secretary General meets with Iraqi Prime Minister

Baghdad, Iraq, 29 March 2018--OPEC’s Secretary General, HE Mohammad Sanusi Barkindo, and an accompanying delegation met with Iraqi Prime Minister HE Haider al-Abadi in Baghdad today. Also present at the high-level meeting was Iraq’s Oil Minister, HE Jabbar Ali Hussein Al-luiebi.

In his comments to the OPEC Secretary General, the Iraqi Prime Minister reiterated Iraq’s full commitment to the historic ‘Declaration of Cooperation’ and its implementation. The ‘Declaration of Cooperation’ was reached on 10 December 2016 with the participation of OPEC’s 14 Member Countries and ten non-OPEC countries.

HE al-Abadi commended OPEC and its Secretary General for having exerted efforts to reduce the stock overhang and rebalance the oil market. The Prime Minister said he was pleased with what the Declaration has achieved so far and gave his assurance that Iraq would play a leading role in the ongoing implementation of the Declaration – and on further institutionalizing the framework of cooperation between OPEC and participating non-OPEC producing countries.

For his part, HE Mohammad Barkindo congratulated the Prime Minister for the “heroic efforts” his government made leading to the liberation of Iraq from terrorism. He also wished Iraq and its people successful elections in May. The Secretary General also briefed HE al-Abadi on current market developments, emphasizing the positive impact that the ‘Declaration of Cooperation’ and its implementation has had on the oil market.
