OPEC and the Environment
The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) has long advocated responsible stewardship of the environment. With the long-term outlook suggesting fossil fuels will continue to provide the bulk of global energy needs, OPEC recognizes the need to protect the environment and support sustainable development.
All OPEC Member Countries are signatories to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and regard environmental protection as a high priority. The statement of OPEC’s Secretary General to the High-Level Segment of the Conference of the Parties (COP) / Conference of the Parties serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP) — organized annually by the UNFCCC — expresses the views of the Organization on the latest developments in the global negotiations related to climate change.
