Anniversary Events
A series of activities and special publications have been planned for 2010 to mark the occasion of OPEC's golden jubilee. These are designed to highlight OPEC's contributions to the stabilization of the oil market and the global economy in general over the past five decades.
Publications:
- Milestone, a special book commemorating the Organization's 50 years. This book will tell the story of the Organization and its achievements since it was founded 50 years ago in Baghdad.
- An illustrated history of oil for children. This book will provide younger readers with a primer to the workings of the oil industry, the origins of petroleum and the role of the Organization in stabilizing the oil market.
- A special issue of the OPEC Bulletin (September 2010).
Exhibitions:
- In Member Countries: These will be organized by each Member Country and will be used to highlight the special relationship each country has with OPEC.
- In Vienna: A special exhibition from September 20 - 29, 2010, will showcase the rich culture and history of each of the Organization's Member Countries. (Brochure/Program) (Secretary General Welcome Remarks at the Exhibition)
Concerts:
- On 1 October, a Venezuelan-sponsored concert of the Teresa Carreño Youth Orchestra of Venezuela, will take place at the Wiener Konzerthaus.
- On 14 October, Qatar will host a Gala Dinner and special performance by the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra at the Wiener Konzerthaus. The Orchestra, based in Doha, is comprised of 101 young musicians from 30 different countries. It was established in 1995 by the Emir of Qatar to promote greater understanding of classical Arabic and Western music.
Competitions:
- Logo: This was organized for the participation of Member Country nationals and was won by Ms. 'Lula' Pilay Garcia from Ecuador. Her winning logo is already in use at the Secretariat and in Member Countries.
- Quiz: Open to high school students in both Member Countries and Austria. Grand finale competition will take place in Vienna on June 30.
Commemorative stamps:
- Special anniversary stamps will be issued by the OPEC Secretariat and in each of the Organization's 12 Member Countries.
Anniversary micro-site:
- The 50th Anniversary micro-site within the redesigned OPEC website will highlight the activities of the Golden Jubilee celebration (all of the above) and will also include reflective interviews with past leaders of the Organization and other oil industry leaders.
